The despicable incidents over the past few weeks have laid bare a dark truth: the Democratic Party has become a safe harbor for anti-Semites. The blatant anti-Semitism of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has exposed not only her own personal beliefs, but even worse, the willingness of her colleagues and the leadership of the Democratic Party to attempt to explain away this disgusting racism. We have heard excuses from the highest levels of the Democratic Party explaining that Rep. Omar “has a different experience in the use of words”, or the Holocaust was a long time ago or that hate for Israel is not really anti-Semitism.

Many Jewish Democrats are heartbroken that the people that they have supported for decades are warmly embracing racism towards Jews. Another minority group would rightfully abandon a political party that is openly hostile to their existence; however, many question if we will see consequences for the rise of anti-Semitism in the Democratic ranks.

The overwhelming majority of American Jews are registered Democrats. This long standing connection between American Jews and the Democratic Party is steeped in history and shared values. American Jews serve in the highest echelons of the Party and are among the largest financial contributors. Even as the US – Israel relations hit a nadir under the Obama Administration’s determined efforts to engage the fanatical Islamic regime in Iran, the vast number of American Jews remained loyal to the Democratic Party.

The label “Israel First” is a derogatory term often used to question of the loyalty of American Jews. This is the anti-Semite’s slander of choice when they want to accuse Jews serving in the American government of some unseen or unknown offense. Since the founding of the state of Israel, hundreds of American Jews have been elected to serve in Congress. There has never been an instance where they celebrated their election victory by paying homage to the flag of Israel. Compare this to another rabid anti-Semite, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, who celebrated her election to Congress by wrapping herself in the Palestinian flag.

If American Jews are largely unfazed by anti-Israel sentiment, they are wise enough to act to preserve their own existence. They respond to the disgusting anti-Semitism that has reared its ugly head in both the Republican and Democratic parties over the decades. Such a reaction was apparent in the recent Gubernatorial race in Florida. Amid accusations of a deep affiliation with groups that condone anti-Semitism, the Democratic candidate, Andrew Gillum, lost a close race by tens of thousands of votes. A similar number of Jewish Floridians who did not vote for President Trump in 2016, chose to support now Governor Desantis instead of Mr. Gillum.

As the British Labor Party has embraced wide scale anti-Semitism, the “Corbynization” of the Democratic Party is unfolding before our eyes. It seems that the rabid anti-Semitism that has found a home in the Democratic Party is here to stay. The Democratic leadership has made the unfortunate decision to appeal to a small but vocal extreme progressive group. With it they have accepted the gross racist anti-Semitism that this group brings.

The failure to show that anti-Semitism has no place in the Democratic Party will have far reaching ramifications. The question is will the Jewish Democrats imperil their own existence by accepting this anti-Semitism – will they stay “Democrats First”? The answer will be apparent in the 2020 elections. However, if one asks which American Party mainstreamed anti-Semitism, the answer is that it was the Democrats first.
