2 officers injured, one critically, as they approach man suspected of vandalism

A police officer was left in critical condition and another lightly injured Wednesday morning when they were assaulted by a man they suspected had vandalized property in the Givat Ze’ev settlement northwest of Jerusalem.

The man attacked the officers with a sharp instrument after opening the door to an apartment when they arrived to question him, Israel Police said in a statement.

One of the officers opened fire at the man, moderately injuring him.

The suspect is in his 20s and apparently suffering from psychological issues, Hebrew media reported. The critically injured policeman is 25, and the other 30, reports said.

Shaare Zedek Medical Center, where the two officers were being treated, said that the critically injured officer had suffered a stab wound to his neck. He was sedated and sent into immediate surgery. The other policeman was lightly injured in the hip, the hospital said in a statement.

The incident happened on Almon Street in the settlement.

Police said in a statement that it had received a report of damage to vehicles. According to Hebrew media reports, the suspect had vandalized several vehicles in the neighborhood, including puncturing tires.

Officers were dispatched to the scene and began searching for the suspect. As they probed the incident, they were directed to an apartment where the suspect was believed to be located, the statement said.

Officers went to the location and when the suspect opened the door “he immediately began to attack the two officers with a sharp instrument,” police said.

“In response to the actions of the suspect and the danger to their lives, one of the officers shot the suspect,” who was moderately injured, police said.

Police opened an investigation into the incident.
