AG asks court to end government inquiry into allegations of police spyware abuse

The Attorney General's Office has asked the High Court of Justice to end the government's inquiry into allegations of police spyware abuse, claiming that the commission is acting unlawfully and is being used to discredit the handling of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's corruption investigation. The government argues that the commission has the power to review open criminal cases and that it has broad discretion in establishing such commissions. The commission was formed in August 2023 to investigate the alleged illicit use of spyware by law enforcement agencies against Israeli citizens and government officials. The Attorney General's Office insists that authorizing a committee to examine individual criminal cases bypasses the rules of government and creates authority to intervene and influence those cases.
