Israel is considering a possible invasion of Lebanon despite the lack of good options. The country's war leadership has updated its goals for the ongoing war with Hamas in Gaza to include allowing residents of the north to return safely home after being evacuated over concerns of a cross-border attack by Hezbollah. However, there is no guarantee that expanding military operations will achieve the desired effect. Israel could carry out an aerial offensive against Lebanon's state infrastructure or target Hezbollah directly. Another option is a limited ground incursion to create a buffer zone in southern Lebanon. However, any operation that doesn't badly damage Hezbollah and force it to redeploy far from the border will likely end with another ceasefire agreement. Israel's conundrum in the north is made more difficult by the ongoing campaign in Gaza, as more troops would be shifted to the north if a ground operation against Hezbollah is launched.
