The Japanese manufacturer Icom is investigating handheld radios that exploded in Lebanon, stating that it had discontinued the device a decade ago. The company had shipped IC-V82 transceivers to overseas markets, including the Middle East, from 2004 to October 2014. Icom has long warned of a surge in counterfeit IC-V82 transceivers and has taken legal action against counterfeit manufacturers. The radios that exploded in Lebanon did not have the counterfeit-prevention sticker, making it difficult to confirm their origin. Counterfeit versions of the radios are at risk of catching fire or exploding due to battery malfunctions.
