"War is immoral. But the rules of war give it some morality," Pope Francis said when asked about Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon that killed Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah as well as non-combatants. The pontiff criticized military attacks that go "beyond morality" and emphasized the need for proportionate defense. He has been more outspoken in recent weeks about Israel's military actions in its war against Hamas, calling them "unacceptable" and urging the international community to intervene. Francis also revealed that he speaks with members of a Catholic parish in Gaza daily, who inform him about the conditions and cruelty on the ground."
