Facebook and Instagram are testing the use of facial recognition technology to help users regain access to their accounts in cases of hacking or misuse of their image. Currently, when an account is suspected to be hacked, users must verify their identity by uploading an official document. However, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, will now test the use of video selfies as a means of identity verification. The technology will also be used to compare faces in ads to original profile pictures to detect scams. Meta has already tested the technology with a small group of celebrities and public figures, showing promising results in identifying and enforcing policies against fraud.
