2024 is predicted to be the world's hottest year on record, according to the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). The data, released ahead of the UN COP29 climate summit, shows that the average global temperature from January to October was so high that 2024 is virtually certain to be the warmest year. This will also be the first year where the planet is more than 1.5 ºC hotter than the pre-industrial period. Carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels are the main cause of global warming. C3S expects the world to exceed the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 ºC by around 2030.
