The 29th UN Climate Change Conference, COP29, began in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan, with the goal of finding ways to bring global carbon emissions under control. Negotiators are expected to secure commitments from leading economies on cutting emissions and financing for developing nations. The world is currently divided and distrustful, making negotiations challenging. COP28 in Dubai last year saw a breakthrough with the first-ever global stocktake and a commitment to transition away from fossil fuels. COP29 President Mukhtar Bahadur Babayev can take inspiration from the success of COP28 and work towards holding countries accountable for their promises.
