Cultural professionals in Lebanon have called on the UN to protect the country's heritage from ongoing assaults on ancient cities and historic landmarks. The petition, signed by 300 cultural figures, urges UNESCO to establish 'no-target zones' around sites such as Baalbek and Tyre, deploy international observers, and enforce measures from the 1954 Hague Convention on cultural heritage in conflict. The charity behind the petition, Change Lebanon, has called on influential states to end military action that damages or destroys sites and to introduce sanctions or additional protections. Enhanced protection status would grant heritage sites immunity from military attacks.
