The deal was negotiated by Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer to prevent the collapse of the PA amid pressure from the US. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich had previously only agreed to extend the agreement for one month at a time, causing uncertainty. The security cabinet ultimately voted in favor of a one-year extension due to security and diplomatic concerns.
