The United Nations has reported that the escalation in fighting in Syria has displaced around 280,000 people in just over a week, with the potential for numbers to reach 1.5 million. This figure does not include those who fled from Lebanon during recent escalations. The mass displacement occurred as militants led by Islamist group Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham launched an offensive, coinciding with a ceasefire between Israel and Syrian President Bashar Assad's ally Hezbollah. The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that this fresh displacement is adding to years of suffering and is working to provide aid and assistance to affected communities. However, more funding is urgently needed to support the growing number of displaced people.
