Following the overthrow of the regime, Damascus experienced at least two days of unrest and destruction. Residents of Damascus joined forces to clean up neighborhoods and restore a semblance of normalcy despite the collapse of municipal services. Civil society groups and community leaders organized cleaning campaigns, largely funded through their own contributions. Volunteers worked to clean areas such as the Mezzeh district, the Old City, and the Muhajreen neighborhood. The efforts extended to hospitals, universities, and public areas like Umayyad Square. The volunteers expressed a genuine desire to rebuild their country and create a better future for Syria.
