The brother of fallen soldier Staff Sgt. Yuval Shoham reveals that Shoham knew murdered hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin and actively searched for him while serving in Gaza. The families of Shoham and Goldberg-Polin were friends and part of the same community in Jerusalem. Shoham's parents had traveled to his base with a package when they were informed of his death. The army announced that Shoham was killed in an accident during fighting in the Jabalia area. Goldberg-Polin was taken hostage in October and killed by his captors in a tunnel in Rafah in August.
