The US Treasury Department stated that these groups aimed to influence the US electorate and incite socio-political tensions. The sanctions are part of the US government's efforts to promote accountability for state-sponsored actors who undermine public trust in democratic institutions. In a separate move, the Treasury Department also announced sanctions on Russian judge Olesya Mendeleeva over the detention of former Moscow city councillor Alexei Gorinov, who had spoken out against Russia's war in Ukraine.
