Former defence minister Tobias Ellwood warns that Britain urgently needs a layered air defence system to protect against ballistic and hypersonic missile attacks. He argues that the current Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) system is inadequate and calls for a multi-layered anti-missile system similar to Israel's Iron Dome defences. Ellwood also criticizes the UK's defence spending, which is around 2.3% of GDP but falls to 1.6% when the cost of the nuclear Trident deterrent is excluded. He suggests that defence spending should be increased to at least 4% of GDP to meet the security challenges facing the country.
