Polish president seeks to shield Netanyahu as warrant scuppers Auschwitz memorial visit

Polish President Andrzej Duda has asked the country's government to guarantee Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu won't be arrested if he attends a key Holocaust memorial event in the country later this month. Netanyahu, who is facing an international warrant for his arrest over alleged war crimes in Gaza, is currently not planning on attending a commemoration marking 80 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp. Duda's aide confirmed the president had sent a letter to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to ensure that Netanyahu is able to participate in the commemoration. Duda has frequently been at odds with the Polish government, suggesting it may not cooperate with his request.
