The Charity Commission has issued an official warning to a Jewish charity in London for fundraising for an Israeli soldier, stating that it is illegal for charities to raise money for foreign militaries. The charity, Chabad Lubavitch Centres North East London and Essex, raised nearly £2,300 for the soldier, with some of the funds sent directly to the soldier and the rest used to purchase non-lethal military equipment. The commission received 180 complaints about the campaign and found that the charity had acted outside of its purposes and failed to act in the best interests of the charity and its reputation. The official warning requires the charity's trustees to correct the misconduct.
