Nearly 200,000 Syrian refugees have returned home since the fall of Bashar Assad in early December, according to the UN refugee chief Filippo Grandi. The returns occurred before an offensive by Islamist rebels ousted Assad. Turkiye, which shares a border with Syria, hosts 2.9 million Syrian refugees and is allowing one member of each refugee family to make three round trips until July 1, 2025 to prepare for their resettlement.
