The World Health Organization (WHO) chief has urged global leaders to pressure the US to reverse its decision to withdraw from the agency, warning that the move will result in the US missing out on crucial information about global disease outbreaks. The US is currently WHO's largest donor, contributing an estimated $988 million for 2024-2025, which accounts for 14% of the agency's budget. The US funding supports many of WHO's emergency operations, covering up to 40% of its large-scale responses. WHO officials have expressed concern about how the agency will cope with the loss of US funding and have proposed several options, including cutting major departments or offices in half.
