A recently deciphered Phoenician inscription on a 4th-century-BCE amphora sherd found off the coast of Tel Achziv offers insight into a shipwreck that occurred 2,400 years ago. The inscription, incised by a semiliterate sailor, mentions the city of Sidon and provides evidence of maritime trade in the area. The pottery sherds were discovered near a reef and small islands, which made the region susceptible to shipwrecks. The inscription and petrographic tests on the clay of the amphoras shed light on the historical and economic phenomena of ancient Israel.
