A New Jersey man has been found guilty of attempted murder and assault for stabbing author Salman Rushdie multiple times on a New York lecture stage in 2022. Hadi Matar, 27, ran onto the stage at the Chautauqua Institution and stabbed Rushdie more than a dozen times before a live audience. Rushdie, who was the key witness during the trial, described his life-threatening injuries and long recovery. Matar could receive up to 25 years in prison. A separate federal indictment alleges that Matar was motivated to attack Rushdie by a 2006 speech endorsing a fatwa calling for Rushdie's death.
