Starmer presses Egyptian president for release of jailed British man

Sir Keir Starmer has raised the case of a jailed British citizen, Alaa Abd El-Fattah, with the president of Egypt. El-Fattah has been detained in Egypt since September 2019 and was sentenced to five years in prison in December 2021. His mother, Laila Soueif, who is on a hunger strike, was taken to the hospital due to an immediate risk to her life. Sir Keir pressed for El-Fattah's release during a phone call with the Egyptian president, and also discussed the hope for a lasting peace in Gaza and the UK-Egypt relationship.
