Israel wants to extend the first phase, but Hamas insists on proceeding with the second phase as planned. The US President, Donald Trump, has warned that the people of Gaza will be in danger unless all remaining hostages are released. Hamas believes that Trump's comments will encourage Israel to ignore the ceasefire terms. 58 hostages remain in captivity out of the 251 taken during Hamas's attack in October 2023.
