Max Frankel, Top Times Editor Who Led a Newspaper in Transition, Dies at 94

Max Frankel, a Pulitzer Prize-winning correspondent for The New York Times and former executive editor, has died at the age of 94. Frankel, who fled Nazi Germany as a child, rose to the top of American journalism and covered major events of his era, including the Cuban missile crisis and the collapse of the Soviet Union. As executive editor of The Times from 1986 to 1994, Frankel oversaw a newspaper in transition, expanding coverage and introducing color to sections. He was widely credited with maintaining the newspaper's traditional journalistic standards and bringing more diversity to the staff.
