Court upholds freeze on Shin Bet chief firing, but lets PM interview for replacement

The High Court extended a freeze on the firing of Shin Bet head Ronen Bar, but allowed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to interview candidates for the agency's leadership. The ruling rejected the Attorney General's request to prevent the government from appointing an interim Shin Bet chief. The government voted to fire Bar amid protests, with Netanyahu citing a loss of faith in him following the Hamas onslaught in October 2023. The court has scheduled a hearing on petitions against Bar's ouster and ordered the government to respond at least 72 hours before the hearing.
