US judge halts deportation of Tufts Turkish student accused of anti-Israel activism

A US federal judge in Massachusetts has temporarily halted the deportation of a Turkish doctoral student at Tufts University who was detained by US immigration officials. The student, Rumeysa Ozturk, was accused by the US Department of Homeland Security of engaging in activities in support of Hamas. Ozturk's arrest came after she co-authored an opinion piece criticizing the university's response to calls for divestment from companies with ties to Israel and to acknowledge the Palestinian genocide. The American Civil Liberties Union has joined her legal defense team, arguing that her detention violates her rights to free speech and due process.
