Aliyah Minister Ofir Sofer states that unlike Israeli ultra-Orthodox, Haredim who make aliyah serve in the army. The statement is made at a march in Jerusalem demanding universal enlistment. Sofer emphasizes the need to increase the number of soldiers, especially combat soldiers. The ultra-Orthodox community has long received blanket military exemptions, but the High Court of Justice ruled that the exemptions could no longer be extended to Haredi youth studying in yeshiva. However, the government has shown little political will to implement the ruling.
