With a 'sword over its head,' High Court may balk at reversing Ronen Bar's dismissal

The High Court of Justice will hear petitions on Tuesday against the government's decision to fire the head of the Shin Bet domestic security agency, Ronen Bar. The petitions argue that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a conflict of interest in removing Bar from office due to the Shin Bet's involvement in the Qatargate investigation. The court may be wary of intervening in the case due to the political nature of the issue and the ongoing attacks against the court. Possible outcomes include the court ruling that the government must base its considerations solely on professional qualifications when hiring a new head of the Shin Bet, or requiring the government to make a statement that appointments will be made on a professional basis without political considerations.
