US Supreme Court pauses deportation of Venezuelans under 1798 law

The US Supreme Court has temporarily halted the deportation of alleged Venezuelan gang members under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act. The law, which has rarely been used in the past, was invoked by President Trump to round up Venezuelan migrants accused of belonging to the Tren de Aragua gang. Rights lawyers filed an emergency appeal to stop the deportation, and the Supreme Court ordered that no member of the detainee group be removed from the US until further notice. Attorneys for previously deported Venezuelans argued that their clients were wrongly targeted based on their tattoos and had committed no crimes.
