The Greek-flagged crude oil tanker Sounion has been on fire in the Red Sea since August 23 after an attack by Yemen's Houthis. The vessel is carrying 150,000 tonnes of crude oil and poses an environmental hazard. The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that the tanker belongs to a company with ties to Israel. The US formed a coalition to safeguard commercial traffic in the Red Sea from Houthi attacks.
