Abd Al-Salam Haniyeh, son of killed Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, revealed in an interview that his father rejected a proposed deal for Palestinian statehood and funding for Gaza. The deal would have also required the disarmament of Hamas. The Palestinian leadership has a history of rejecting offers for statehood, including the Peel Commission in 1936, the Partition Plan in 1948, and offers in 2000 and 2008. Hamas officials continue to oppose a two-state solution. Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in July, and Iran has promised to retaliate.
