The City of Johannesburg in South Africa has proposed renaming one of its streets after Palestinian terrorist Leila Khaled, who attempted to hijack planes in 1969 and 1970. The street in question, Sandton Drive, is home to the US Consulate. The decision to rename is open for public comment until 18 October. The South African Zionist Federation strongly opposes the move, stating that it goes against Johannesburg's policy on naming streets and public places. The US designates the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), of which Khaled is a member, as a terrorist organization.
