Israel says it has assassinated the leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah. Nasrallah was born in Beirut in 1960 to a poor Shia family and joined Hezbollah in 1982. Under his leadership, Hezbollah became a regional military and political power and an arch-enemy of Israel. Nasrallah rose to power after the killing of then-leader Abbas Musawi in 1992. His popularity took a hit when Hezbollah fighters sided with Assad's forces in Syria's civil war.
