Olmert disclosed the details of the operation, stating that the explosion was caused by an explosive placed in the bumper of Mughniyeh's vehicle. Mughniyeh was responsible for planning and carrying out numerous terrorist acts and was on the FBI's most wanted list. Following his death, both Hezbollah and Syria blamed Israel and vowed to avenge his killing.
