Israel-Hezbollah war: what is UN resolution 1701?

UN Security Council Resolution 1701 was voted in unanimously to end the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah. It called for the deployment of Lebanese government forces and UNIFIL peacekeeping force in areas south of Lebanon's Litani River. Hezbollah, the only group in Lebanon that refused to disarm, has maintained its arsenal. UNIFIL peacekeepers monitor the Blue Line demarcated by the United Nations. Since the war, Hezbollah has remained in the flashpoint area and sporadic clashes have occurred. The recent conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has forced thousands of people to flee their homes.
