From Parshat Bereishit, which describes the creation of the world in six days, we learn that God did not create a perfect world where humans could simply rest and do nothing. The world is not complete until its creatures act and contribute. Humans are tasked with contemplating how they can benefit the world, set goals, and 'do.' The world was created with the need for completion and improvement. Humans are the only beings whose purpose on Earth is to 'act' and use life's abilities for good. In addition to action, humans must pray for divine assistance. The essential partnership between human action and divine blessing is illustrated through the necessity of rain for the world.
