The Islamic Republic of Iran reportedly executed journalist Jamshid Sharmahd, a resident of California and a critic of the regime, on Monday. Sharmahd's daughter claims he was scapegoated by the Iranian regime over bombing allegations and had an affinity for the United States. The Biden administration faced criticism for allegedly abandoning Sharmahd and punting his case to Germany. Sharmahd survived an assassination attempt in California and was kidnapped by the Iranian regime in Dubai in 2020. Amnesty International noted that his trial was grossly unfair and he had been subjected to enforced disappearance, torture, and denial of adequate healthcare since July 2020.
