The UN cultural agency UNESCO will consider enhanced protection for ancient sites in Lebanon after Israeli strikes hit close to Roman ruins designated as World Heritage sites. The announcement came after more than 100 Lebanese lawmakers appealed to UNESCO to ensure the preservation of heritage sites in areas heavily bombed by Israel during its war with Hezbollah. Lebanon is home to six UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Roman ruins in Baalbek and Tyre. Prime Minister Najib Mikati called for a ceasefire to protect the country's cultural heritage.
