Famine is looming in the northern Gaza Strip due to increased hostilities and a near-halt in food aid, warns a UN-backed assessment. The Famine Review Committee alerts of an imminent and substantial likelihood of famine occurring in the rapidly deteriorating situation in the Gaza Strip. The number of people facing catastrophic food insecurity is projected to reach 345,000, or 16 percent of the population, between November 2024 and April 2025. Conditions have worsened in the north of Gaza, with a collapse of food systems, drop in humanitarian aid, and critical water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions. Access to food continues to deteriorate, with prices of essentials on the black market soaring.
