Two Somali pirates have been sentenced to 30 years in prison for kidnapping American journalist Michael Scott Moore and holding him hostage for nearly 1000 days. The pirates were convicted of hostage-taking, terrorism, and firearms offenses. Moore was kidnapped in 2012 while researching piracy in Somalia and was held under armed guard and chained every night. His family paid a ransom of $1.6 million for his release in 2014. Moore published a book about his experience in 2018, where he spoke about how writing kept him sane during his captivity.
