The UN peacekeeping chief has stated that the redeployment of Lebanese armed forces in the south is crucial for a lasting solution to the Hezbollah-Israel clashes. The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has over 9,300 troops tasked with monitoring the border between Lebanon and Israel. UNIFIL is operating under the assumption that a return to negotiations and the implementation of Resolution 1701 will be the basis for post-cessation of hostilities. Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006, called for a ceasefire and the deployment of only the Lebanese army and peacekeepers in the country's south. UNIFIL has faced attacks and demands to leave, but the peacekeeping chief has stated that the force will hold its line.
