A study published in the journal Royal Society Open Science suggests that Neolithic miners in Eastern Europe may have invented the wheel around 3900 B.C. The research challenges traditional beliefs about the wheel's origins and proposes that its invention was an evolutionary process driven by environmental challenges. The miners needed an efficient means to transport heavy loads of copper ore through narrow mine tunnels, leading to the development of the wheel. The researchers employed computational mechanics and design science to analyze the evolution of the wheel from simple rollers to a wheel-and-axle system.
