As truce talks progress, Lebanon's army cornered by politics, funding

Efforts for a truce in Lebanon have highlighted the role of the country's army, which is expected to keep the south free of Hezbollah weapons but is unwilling and unable to confront the Iran-backed group. The Lebanese Armed Forces, though weaker than Hezbollah, will likely be required to deploy thousands of troops to the south after any ceasefire deal. However, the army will need Hezbollah's approval to do so and will avoid confrontations that could trigger internal strife. The United States is keen to see the army confront Hezbollah more directly, but such a move would risk internal conflict due to Hezbollah's military strength and its shares of Lebanon's cabinet and parliament.
