Criminals are getting away with their offences due to a lack of police presence on the streets, according to the Home Secretary. Yvette Cooper expressed concern that victims no longer believe the police will respond when they report a crime. She highlighted the impact of austerity cuts on police forces, revealing that the number of people who never see an officer on the street has doubled. Cooper promised to rebuild neighbourhood policing and address the rising rates of shoplifting and muggings. The government has pledged to deploy 13,000 more neighbourhood police, PCSOs, and special constables.
