Reg Murphy, Newspaper Editor Whose Kidnapping Riveted the U.S., Dies at 90

Reg Murphy, a well-regarded editor and publisher of newspapers in Atlanta, San Francisco, and Baltimore, has died at the age of 90. He is best known for being kidnapped in Atlanta in 1974 by a right-wing terrorist. Murphy was held captive for 49 hours before being released. His captor, William A.H. Williams, was later arrested and convicted. Murphy went on to have a successful career in journalism, serving as editor and publisher of The San Francisco Examiner and The Baltimore Sun. He was also the president of the United States Golf Association and the National Geographic Society.
