Archaeologists have discovered 12,000-year-old perforated stones in Israel that may represent early evidence for the adoption of spinning with the 'spindle and whorl' device. The wheel-shaped stones were found at Nahal Ein-Gev II in the Jordan Valley, with a total of 113 stones discovered since 1972. Researchers believe that these stones were most likely used as spindle whorls based on their shape, material, and the size and location of the holes. High-resolution 3D models were used to study the stones in detail, revealing standard measures and morphological parameters. Feasibility tests were conducted with replicas, demonstrating that the stones function well as spindle whorls.
