Australian author Richard Flanagan has delayed accepting the $97,000 prize money from winning the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction after criticising the sponsor. Flanagan stated that he will only accept the prize money once the sponsor increases its investment in renewable energy and reduces its investment in fossil fuels. He emphasized the devastating impact of the climate crisis on his own country and called for collective action. Baillie Gifford has faced criticism for its investments in companies linked to Israel and fossil fuels. Flanagan's novels have received numerous honours and he won the Man Booker Prize in 2014.
