Indian manufacturers are charging higher prices for trinitrotoluene (TNT) due to a surge in global demand for artillery and tank shells. The prices of TNT have increased from 5.5 lakh a tonne to 8.5 lakh a tonne. The demand for 155mm shells, used in howitzers and tank ammunition, has led to the price hike. Munitions India Limited (MIL), Solar Industries Limited, and Special Blasts Limited (SBL) are the major manufacturers of TNT in India. MIL continues to dominate the market, while SBL focuses on the foreign market. The escalation in prices is being passed on to foreign buyers, while the armed forces continue to receive supplies at the earlier rates.
