The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that 2024 had the highest number of deaths among humanitarian aid workers compared to previous years. OCHA stated that 281 aid workers died in 2024, surpassing the previous record of 280 deaths in 2023. The majority of the deaths occurred in Gaza since October 7, 2023, with 320 aid workers killed, many of whom were UNRWA staff members. The UN emphasized that most of the aid workers killed were employed by non-governmental organizations. The Aid Worker Security Database (AWSD) also highlighted high levels of violence against aid workers in countries like Afghanistan, Sudan, and Ukraine.
